Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): Therapy for Edema, Lymphedema & Whole-Body Wellness

MLD is a gentle, rhythmic form of bodywork that supports the healthy function of the lymphatic system, a vital part of the immune system responsible for removing waste, excess fluid from the body. MLD is particularly effective for reducing swelling (edema) and managing lymphedema, a condition in which lymph fluid builds up due to damage or removal of lymph nodes, often following surgery or cancer treatment.

Using light, precise movements that follow the natural pathways of lymph flow, MLD encourages drainage of congested tissues, reduces inflammation, supports immune response, and promotes tissue healing. In addition to its therapeutic applications for clinical swelling disorders, MLD is also valued for its detoxifying effects and ability to reduce puffiness, improve local circulation, and enhance overall relaxation and well-being.

For licensed massage therapists, MLD offers a powerful, non-invasive tool to support clients with a variety of health concerns—from post-surgical recovery to chronic inflammation and general wellness.  Check out our  MLD workshops:

September 20th & 21st, 2025 - Asheville, NC

Course Description

In this comprehensive 12-hour continuing education workshop, licensed massage therapists will explore the foundations and practical application of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) techniques for the head, neck, and face. Grounded in the classical teachings of Dr. Emil and Dr. Estrid Vodder and refined by the clinical methods of Dr. Etelka and Dr. Michael Földi, this training bridges traditional techniques with modern therapeutic applications.

Participants will:

  • Review the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system

  • Learn the location and function of the key lymphatic watersheds of the head, neck, and face

  • Practice and demonstrate the five foundational Vodder MLD strokes

  • Perform MLD protocols specifically tailored to these regions

Special focus will be placed on the "opening of the terminus"—a short neck routine essential for effective lymphatic flow—and on directing lymphatic fluid through appropriate drainage pathways. Students will develop hands-on skills to support clients recovering from surgery or trauma, as well as those seeking relief from chronic inflammatory conditions such as migraines, fibromyalgia, or sinus congestion.

Additionally, this gentle and deeply calming work offers cosmetic benefits by reducing puffiness, enhancing skin tone, and promoting a radiant, relaxed appearance.

This workshop is ideal for massage therapists who want to integrate clinical-grade lymphatic work into their practices with confidence and competence.

Course Description

This 12-hour hands-on workshop offers licensed massage therapists an in-depth exploration of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) techniques for the upper extremities, including the shoulders, arms, elbows, wrists, and hands. Building on the foundational work of Drs. Emil and Estrid Vodder and informed by the clinical protocols of Dr. Etelka and Dr. Michael Földi, this training provides both theoretical understanding and practical application for treating swelling, inflammation, and dysfunction in the upper body.

Participants will:

  • Review the lymphatic anatomy and physiology relevant to the upper extremities

  • Identify and understand the major lymphatic watersheds and drainage pathways for the arms and shoulders

  • Practice the five classic Vodder MLD strokes

  • Learn and demonstrate MLD protocols for reducing edema in the upper limb, including post-surgical swelling (e.g., mastectomy, orthopedic procedures)

  • Explore adaptations for chronic conditions such as arthritis, repetitive strain injuries, and fibromyalgia

Therapists will also gain skills to promote tissue healing, increase range of motion, and provide calming, restorative care for clients managing pain, inflammation, or restricted movement in the upper limbs.

This course emphasizes gentle, effective techniques that support both clinical outcomes and client comfort—making it an invaluable addition to any therapeutic massage practice.

Deep Lymphatic Massage:  Opening the Four Corners - Abdomen & Thorax

8-Hour NCBTMB-Approved Workshop
Instructor: Hope DeVall, LMBT, MLD-C

Price:  $150

Dates:

July 26th, 2025 - Asheville, NC    REGISTER NOW

October 25th, 2025 - Asheville, NC

Course Description

This advanced 8-hour workshop is designed for licensed massage therapists seeking to deepen their understanding and practice of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) with a focus on the core of the body, where deep lymphatic structures play a vital role in whole-body fluid regulation and immune function.

“Opening the Four Corners” refers to essential anatomical gateways in the abdomen and thorax that must be accessed to support optimal lymphatic flow throughout the entire system. These include the axillary, inguinal, clavicular, and abdominal regions, which house major lymphatic ducts, cisterns, and nodes responsible for filtering and transporting lymph from both the upper and lower body.  A blend of Lymphatic and Myofascial techniques opens the pathways and reduces congestion.
